10 Ways to Make Money from Home
Updated: Aug 12, 2019
Dream of becoming a digital nomad? Want to find a great side hustle? People are flocking to the online workplace in massive numbers to earn money from home. I’ve put together a list of what I consider the 10 best ways to make money from home. These opportunities are tried and true, with reputable sites and successful people behind them. It’s important to note that some require minimal effort, while others will necessitate serious time and even financial investment. Check out the list and earn cash online now!
1. Online Surveys
The easiest way to make money from home is by taking surveys. Most online surveys won’t pay you directly with cash but instead grant vouchers or points you can redeem at both online and brick-and-mortar stores (think Amazon and Target). Many admittedly don’t pay well per survey, but if you take 10 per week or more, you can start earning serious cash for things you already buy. Survey Junkie is great because you can earn points and get paid with real money via PayPal. Swagbucks is another awesome option that pays in gift cards to take surveys, watch videos, and shop online.
A word of caution — the two websites listed above are legitimate, but the online survey game is full of scams. Be cautious, do your research, and only go to reputable sites with positive reviews.
2. Start a blog.
If you’ve been itching to start your own blog, now is the time! Blogs are able to generate revenue because if the content is good, they drive major traffic to the website.
What exactly qualifies as good content? Good content that search engines love is useful (like this list!), thought provoking, or helpful to users. You don’t have to be an amazing writer or take amazing photos. If you can identify a niche and relate to your audience, you can launch a successful blog. And if you already have social media channels like Facebook and Instagram to leverage, you’re a step ahead!
3. Online Virtual Assistant
More and more companies are skipping the traditional hiring routes and looking for online freelancers. Becoming an online virtual assistant is a great way to earn part-time or full-time income from the comfort of your home. Lots of professionals, especially entrepreneurs and contractors, are on the hunt for digital assistants to help with administrative tasks like emails, scheduling, and spreadsheets.
Step one: prepare your resume. Step two: find a reputable site where these jobs are posted and create a profile. Indeed is an excellent, free resource for online virtual assistant jobs. Upwork is another hotbed for virtual assistant opportunities, but you will have to pay a small amount each time you apply.
4. Online Tutoring
If you have a high school diploma or GED, you can become an online tutor. Some programs may require additional certification, and it’s a good idea to go down the certification route if you really want to build your business. But to get started, you just need a passion for teaching and a little motivation. Tutors.com not only gives you free access to online tutoring jobs, but they have tons of resources to get you started. Indeed is also a great place to access these job postings for free.
Are you a fast typer and a good listener? You can earn quick cash transcribing presentations, videos, and even television episodes. Live captioning requires extensive experience, but you can get your feet wet as a beginner with companies like AI Media. At AI Media, the pay isn’t great (sometimes just $5-$10 per video), but the faster you get, the more you can make hourly. 3 Play Media is another online transcription company with excellent resources on their blog to learn more about the business. Once you learn the ins and outs, transcription may be the solid side hustle you’re looking for.
6. Start a YouTube channel.
You would be SHOCKED at the staggering amount of money ‘average’ people are making for their YouTube videos. Like starting a blog, the name of the game here is useful content. What do you have to offer that can help people? Even sharing your passions and hobbies can peak people’s interests. Find a niche, produce killer content, and leverage your other social media channels, and you may be surprised how much you can actually make on YouTube. There is a ton of information out there to help you, and here is a decent video that walks you through the process.
7. Sell handmade goods on Etsy.
If you enjoy knitting or making jewelry in your spare time, consider selling some of your homemade goodies on Etsy. Etsy levels the playing field for home artisans by providing the same search technology as Amazon and the other huge commercial sellers. Consumers can search for the type of products you make and find you easily. With Etsy, you can take your love of arts and crafts to the bank.
8. Start a dropship business.
Starting a dropship business is one of the most profitable ways to make money from home, but you have to be willing to put in major time and effort. With the dropship business model, you run your very own online store without ever holding inventory, storing, or shipping items. You can set your own prices, and if you’re successful, you may just be able to quit your 9 to 5 for good. Check out this step-by-step breakdown of how to start a dropship business to see if it’s right for you.
9. Trade cryptocurrencies.
Trading cryptocurrencies is by far and away the riskiest and most expensive endeavor on this list — it’s also the most lucrative. Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies don’t follow the same rules as the stock market; anyone anywhere can trade cryptos 24/7.
Bitcoin’s surge in late 2017 made many average people millionaires and converted thousands of people into day traders. Coinbase is the preferred exchange for beginners, but be sure to do mountains of research before getting into this highly volatile market.
10. Become a writer.
Whether you want to write a novel, ghost write, or write articles for websites, you can become a writer with little to no experience if you have the acumen. You’ll need to build a portfolio, so the general wisdom is to start small with lower paying jobs, build your portfolio and your ratings, and gradually command a higher rate. Freelancer, Peopleperhour, and Upwork are all teeming with online writing job posts. Create your profile and get to work!
